Smart Building Infrastructure Technician (Critical Infrastructure)

Job Summary
As a Smart Building Infrastructure Technician, you will be site-based within a large operational environment, working as part of a dedicated on-site team responsible for the installation, support, and maintenance of specialist smart building technologies.
You will bring strong core competencies in copper and fibre network infrastructure installation, alongside a willingness to develop skills across a range of smart technologies, including Audio-Visual, Electronic Security, IoT, and wired, wireless, and mobile networks.
By applying a high standard of technical knowledge and workmanship, you will contribute to the successful delivery of projects on time and within budget, while maintaining strict health and safety standards. Providing a high level of customer service and accurately interpreting end-user requirements will be a key part of the role.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
Copper and Fibre ICT Infrastructure
- Install, terminate, and test copper (CAT5e/6/6A), fibre optic (OS1/2, OM3/4/5), and voice cabling infrastructure.
- Install, terminate, and test Electronic Security and Audio-Visual cabling systems.
- Conduct infrastructure testing using industry-standard test equipment and software, ensuring compliance with manufacturer and industry standards.
Smart Building Technologies & Systems
- Assemble and install telecommunications equipment cabinets (pre-built or flat-pack).
- Install fixtures and fittings suitable for the operational environment.
- Install containment systems safely, including tray, basket, trunking, and conduit.
- Install endpoint equipment such as Electronic Security devices, Wi-Fi and mobile access points, IoT sensors, and Audio-Visual devices.
- Install and mount network equipment in cabinets in accordance with manufacturer specifications, including switches, routers, controllers, servers, and WAN equipment.
- Complete system and equipment patching.
Maintenance & Fault Finding
- Support commissioning, maintenance, servicing, fault-finding, rectification, decommissioning, and equipment relocation activities.
- Carry out network infrastructure maintenance and diagnose and repair common faults.
Documentation & Reporting
- Complete accurate and timely documentation, including certification where required.
- Report progress and issues to line management using agreed systems and processes.
Health & Safety
- Comply with RAMS and all site-specific health and safety requirements.
- Work from construction drawings, diagrams, schematics, scopes, and specifications.
- Take responsibility for personal health and safety and that of others affected by your work.
Knowledge
- Understanding of IT network architecture, cable types, and networking equipment.
- Knowledge of copper and fibre testing parameters and certification standards.
- Awareness of Access Control and CCTV installation standards.
- Understanding of containment system installation.
- Knowledge of health and safety risks associated with cabling installation.
- Awareness of Working at Height regulations and access equipment requirements.
- Familiarity with IoT concepts and emerging smart building technologies.
- Understanding of rack and cabinet construction and installation.
- Appreciation of the importance of accurate documentation and handover.
Skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to follow processes and technical instructions accurately.
- Good numeracy and literacy skills for task planning and execution.
- Ability to interpret project drawings and technical documentation.
- Proficient in the use of cable and network test equipment (e.g. Fluke, OTDR).
- Ability to work safely at height and in confined spaces, following correct procedures.

Qualifications
Essential
- Valid ECS or CSCS card.
- Relevant industry qualification (e.g. CNet, BICSI Installer Level 2/3, or equivalent).
- Full, clean UK driving licence.
Desirable
- First Aid qualification.
- IPAF or PASMA certification.
- GCSE-level education or equivalent, including Maths and English.
