Job summary

Working within the Data Engineering team which delivers and maintains data transfer pipelines between clinical/operational source systems and the Christie Central Data Repository (CCDR) enabling the delivery of high-quality business and complex clinical reporting structures from disparate systems. We are seeking an experienced Data Architect with a strong background in data modelling and extensive experience of modern mainstream data platforms. This role will support the Data Engineering modernisation programme focused on automating data integration and building robust data solutions, and the Joint Analytics for Cancer, a flagship initiative to unlock the full potential of oncology data at The Christie.

24-month fixed term. The role can be home or office based but there is a requirement to attend the office one day a week and for specific meetings/occasions.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for planning, design, and delivery of Data Management architecture and associated products and services.

The post holder will play a key role in shaping the role and services provided by the Data Engineering team. The post holder will lead on the planning and development of the necessary architecture, tools, and resources to handle high variety, volume, and velocity data sets. The post holder will ensure effective communication of conclusions and recommendations across the organisation's leadership structure.

To proactively provide highly specialised advice and guidance on data ingestion, orchestration, modelling, data mining, Cloud services, and the development of unstructured health related data sets and information.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To be the Trust specialist on designing and developing distributed processing of large data sets, data mining, ingestion, orchestration, in-memory technologies, and data lakes/warehousing.

The Data Architect is expected to undertake duties of an unpredictable and highly complex nature in the course of their duties in the provision of specialist skills relating to data architecture principles and their application across complex analytics and insights to the Trust. The post holder will, in the course of their duties need to interpret, analyse, and synthesize data into results and findings that can be understood by non-technical colleagues.

To support the data management programme, with responsibility in ensuring the development is carried out as a cross-functional team cognoscente each person has defined roles and responsibilities and contributes to our aims and objectives. The post holder will need to ensure effective and timely delivery progress to schedule and quality.

The post holder will need to be able to respond to sudden unexpected demands, for example providing guidance and specialist technical skills to enable new returns at national level or addressing a clinical need within the locality, whilst managing existing competing pressures at the same time within their service delivery.

Be responsible for supporting remediation and recovery activities where there may not be a precedent; identifying and addressing under-performing delivery aspects and providing guidance to their operational team to help bring them back on track.

The post holder will devise and provide highly specialised advice and guidance on data ingestion, orchestration, modelling, data mining, Cloud services, and including the development of unstructured health related data sets and information. The post holder will provide assessments, recommendations, and planning on the use of emerging Cloud technologies.

Advise on the identification and acquisition of diverse data sets from a range of internal and disparate public sources.

Advise on the specification and development of processes for highly complex datasets using a wide-ranging technical and analytical skill-set.

Advise on the automation and scheduling of the extraction and processing of large and complex data sets across distributed platforms. To proactively seek sophisticated, scalable solutions to Information and reporting problems that ensure the Trust can evolve in an increasingly demanding climate.

The post holder will support Trust software development requirements for data driven services and act as a specialist on data integration and enterprise data architecture.

To promote the integrity and governance of the data extracted and held in Trust systems.

To tutor and support colleagues in appropriate scripting, modelling, and other techniques for the new data platform.

To work collaboratively with analysts and service leads on supporting their local requirements and meeting the business needs of the organisation.

To ensure thorough documentation and change control processes are in place, accessible and maintained for all processes and developments.

Experience and knowledge of the latest industry-leading database technologies, general-purpose programming languages.

Experience and knowledge of designing scalable, relational databases.

Comply with all legal, regulatory and Trust requirements including policies, standing financial instructions, standing orders and procedures.

Undertake other duties as required commensurate with the post.

Contribute to business appraisals and business case production when required in partnership with NHS stake holders. Undertake solution searches and appraisals of supplier proposals.

Ensure Trust procurement processes and procedures are followed in a timely and efficient manner and participate in the procurement process where relevant, providing assistance for the development and assessment of procurement documentation as required.

Ensure the post holder adheres to Trust Standing Financial Instructions (SFIs).

Project Management

Advise and participate in the development and implementation of projects, where required, ensuring Informatics provision of integrated solutions and user objectives are achieved.

Ensure project tasks, where required, are successfully delivered in line with agreed timescales and budgets.

Support the activities of project boards and project teams, when required, and making presentations, where required, to all levels of staff.

Act as an ambassador for the Christie Informatics Service by developing and maintaining excellent working relationships with users across organisations to deliver a high quality, standard IT culture to achieve local requirements and national targets.

Lead in the development and maintenance of a culture of service provision and continuous improvement for own areas.

Be responsible for implementing policies for own work area and for proposing changes to policies, in line with legislation, Trust and NHS policies and guidelines across the Trust, where appropriate.

Pro-actively participate in ensuring that Informatics services delivered within the Trust reflect best practice with respect to organisational, NHS and legislative requirements and guidelines including IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL), Data Protection Act (1998), Information Standards, Information Security and compliance with NHS Information Governance.

Participate in Information Governance and security as required and ensure appropriate governance and security in own area.

Participate in quality management system, undertaking audits designed to improve IT systems and services.

Ensure change management is applied in own areas and follows implemented policies and procedures.
