Control Systems Engineer

Location: Manchester (Hybrid working)
Contract Length: Initial 3 months (strong extension potential)
Rate: 40- 50 per hour
IR35 Status: Outside IR35

Overview

We are working with an innovative green energy engineering company based in Manchester that is delivering projects across renewable and low-carbon energy systems.

They are looking to bring in an experienced Control Systems Engineer on a contract basis to support the design, development, and delivery of control systems for energy and sustainability-focused projects.

This role offers hybrid working, flexibility, and the opportunity to contribute to technically interesting projects with a strong environmental impact.



Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and modify control systems for green energy and renewable projects

  • PLC programming and configuration for automated energy systems

  • Development of:

    • Functional Design Specifications (FDS)

    • Control philosophies

    • I/O lists and control narratives

  • HMI/SCADA development and integration

  • Support system testing, FATs, SATs, and commissioning activities

  • Work closely with:

    • Electrical design engineers

    • Project managers

    • Site and commissioning teams

  • Ensure systems comply with:

    • Relevant UK and international standards

    • Cybersecurity and safety requirements where applicable

  • Provide technical support during installation and commissioning phases



Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as a Control Systems Engineer within:

    • Renewable energy

    • Green energy

    • Power, utilities, or energy-adjacent industries

  • Strong PLC programming experience (one or more of the following):

    • Siemens

    • Rockwell / Allen Bradley

    • Beckhoff

    • Schneider

  • Experience with SCADA / HMI systems

  • Strong understanding of industrial automation and control architectures

  • Ability to work autonomously in a contract environment

  • Comfortable working on a hybrid basis with site and office presence as required



Desirable Experience

  • Experience with:

    • Solar, wind, battery storage, hydrogen, or low-carbon energy projects

  • Knowledge of:

    • Functional safety

    • IEC / BS standards

  • Previous outside IR35 contract experience

  • Commissioning or site-based controls experience
