Role Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Location: Cambridge (Hybrid – 3 days per week in the office)
Salary banding: £65,000 – £75,000 + bonus & excellent benefits
We’ve been exclusively instructed on a fantastic new opportunity for a Legal Counsel, Commercial & IP to join a highly regarded, innovation-led business based in Cambridge. Operating in a creative, IP-rich and technology-driven sector, this organisation combines commercial ambition with a genuinely collaborative culture and an exciting future roadmap. This role offers exposure to a broad and high-quality workload across commercial, IP, data and regulatory matters, with real visibility across the business. It would suit a lawyer who enjoys variety, autonomy and being close to the action. The business operates a hybrid working model (minimum three days per week in the Cambridge office).
The Role
Reporting into the General Counsel and working as part of a close-knit in-house legal team, you’ll advise across a wide range of legal issues impacting the business’ products, partnerships and IP assets. You’ll work closely with commercial, development, marketing and operational teams, acting as a pragmatic and trusted adviser. This is an excellent opportunity for a Qualified Solicitor with 1 – 5 years’ experience (post-qualification or equivalent, strong pre-qualification experience will be considered) who is keen to build a long-term in-house career in a fast-moving, creative environment.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial contracting: Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements, including MSAs, NDAs, supplier and services, marketing, partnership and licensing arrangements
IP & licensing: Support and advise on IP-related matters, including incoming and outgoing licence agreements, IP usage, branding, infringement risk and protection of core IP assets
Regulatory & consumer matters: Provide pragmatic advice on consumer protection considerations relevant to digital products and services, and support the maintenance of customer-facing terms, policies and online content
Data protection & emerging technology: Draft and review data processing and data-sharing agreements, support compliance with data protection laws, assist with data incidents where required, and provide guidance on emerging regulation (including AI-related developments)
Business partnering: Work closely with commercial, product, marketing and operational teams, delivering clear, commercial and solution-focused legal advice
About You
- Qualified solicitor (England & Wales), with a minimum of 1 years’ relevant experience (pre-qualification experience welcomed)
- Experience reviewing, drafting and negotiating a broad range of commercial agreements; exposure to IP or technology-led work is highly desirable
- Ideally with an in-house background, though strong private practice applicants will be considered (particularly those with an in-house secondment)
- Exposure to consumer law, data protection or regulatory matters would be an advantage
- Commercial, pragmatic and confident advising stakeholders at different levels
- Strong drafting, organisational and communication skills
- Comfortable managing multiple matters in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent client care skills
- Curious, adaptable and keen to grow in a broad in-house role
