We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated QA Tester to join our dynamic Digital and Data team at Public Health Wales. You'll play a key role in developing and delivering high-quality digital solutions that support national health services. Working closely with senior technical leads and your team, you'll contribute to designing, building, and maintaining systems that improve digital health services in Wales. It's a great time to join us as we're adopting new technologies and growing our technical professions.

The role sits within the Research, Data and Digital Directorate and contributes directly to the organisation's strategic goals. You'll work closely with cross-functional teams, senior leaders, and external partners to help shape effective, future-ready services across the health system.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist with planning and executing testing activities to support quality standards for secure and interoperable systems.
  • Use testing tools under guidance and contribute to basic test automation, following established best practices.
  • Work with team member and stakeholders to ensure testing aligns with technical, clinical, and business requirements.
  • Apply agile and user-centred testing practices and collaborating with diverse teams.
  • Follow data protection, cyber security, and national standards in all testing activities.
  • Assist with defect tracking and troubleshooting, helping maintain system reliability through effective testing.

Job responsibilities

Join Public Health Wales as a QA Tester and play a pivotal role in transforming how we deliver digital and data services across the organisation.

As a QA Tester, you will help deliver robust digital solutions that support Public Health Wales' goals. Working with product owners, architects, and user researchers, youll ensure systems are user-focused and meet high standards, while contributing to best practices and continuous improvement.

What Youll Do

  • Assist with testing activities from concept to deployment, supporting quality and timely delivery.
  • Use modern testing tools and frameworks (e.g., Selenium, Playwright, Postman, Azure DevOps, JMeter) to validate and maintain high-quality solutions.
  • Participate in test planning and execution, contribute to test automation, and follow high quality assurance standards.
  • Follow secure testing practices and comply with DPIA and cyber security requirements.

Work with team members to support collaboration and learn from technical discussions.

Share knowledge and provide support to colleagues, helping promote best practices in testing and team development.

What Youll Bring

  • Experience of supporting testing and validation activities to maintain quality in digital solutions.
  • Foundational knowledge of quality assurance, basic test automation, and modern testing practices.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to explain testing processes and quality standards to non-specialist audiences.
  • A collaborative approach, with a willingness to learn and support team objectives.
  • Desirable: Professional certifications (e.g., ISTQB, Agile), experience with test automation tools (e.g., Selenium, Playwright, Postman) and scripting languages.
  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential
  • Degree in a technical, digital or scientific discipline OR equivalent qualification OR equivalent level of knowledge and skills.
  • Foundational knowledge of software testing in Agile teams.
Desirable
  • ISTQB Foundation Level Certification.
  • Awareness of accessibility standards and WCAG compliance.
  • Knowledge of RESTful APIs and microservices.
  • Awareness of clinical safety standards (with support/training).

Experience

Essential
  • Experience of designing and executing test cases in a structured environment.
  • Experience using tools such as Selenium, Playwright, Postman, Azure DevOps.
  • Hands-on use of C#, SQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript for testing and automation.
  • Exposure to Agile delivery and DevOps practices.
  • Ability to ensure high standards of data quality.
  • Experience of Jest for JavaScript Testing or other JavaScript Testing Framework.
  • Experience of SQL or other database testing framework.
Desirable
  • Familiarity with cloud-native testing tools and concepts (e.g., Azure, Docker).
  • Experience working with or supporting Clinical Safety Officers.
  • Exposure to SonarQube, Application Insights or performance profiling tools.

  • Ability to trace requirements through to test results and defect closure.
  • Strong documentation and analytical skills.
  • Ability to organise work and meet tight testing deadlines.

  • Ability to support integration, regression and user acceptance testing.
Desirable
  • Welsh Language Skills are desirable at levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh, or willing to learn.
